Something About Me

My name is Landon Hatch. I am currently a Web Development major studying at Utah Valley University. Born in the 90's, I am from a generation that got to grow up using computers. Computers always fascinated me as a kid and continue to fascinate me as a college student seeking a computer related career.

I mainly consider myself a PC person. At home, we always had windows PCs so that is what I grew up using. That’s not to say I wasn’t exposed to Macs as well. I remember using the colorful iMac G3 in elementary school. My sixth grade year they even gave each of us a personal Macbook computer to use in class and could even take it home on the weekends. I spent countless hours on it playing Super Marble Blast. That game was a blast. I am still partial to PCs but I can definitely can still appreciate a good Mac.

Seventh grade was my first year in Junior High School. At that time I decided that I wanted to play the drums. I tried out for percussion class and got in! After doing that for two years I realized that I loved playing the drum set but hated being in band, so I quit band and got my first drum set. Ever since then I have loved playing the drums in my free time. I even had a couple of friends who played the guitar that I would jam with. Back in 2014, I invested in a Yamaha DTX-522k, an electric drum set — not quite as fun to play as an acoustic set but it’s a little easier to fit inside a small apartment, and quieter too. I still to this day enjoy jamming with my best friend while he slays it on his Eddy Van Halen guitar.

In High School, I got my first smartphone. It was an HTC Hero — one of the first Android phones. I loved that thing! It was a little rough around the edges and it had its problems, but it’s what made me fall in love with Android. I have had an Android phone ever since and currently am saving up to get one of the newer Pixel phones. Smartphones are great and I love reading about all the new smartphone technology.

My senior year of High School, I dropped my last semester of pre-calc — which I didn’t need — to take a Web design class. I didn’t know much about websites or coding at that point but it sounded like it could be fun. I ended up really enjoying that class. It was really interesting to learn how websites worked and how to make them using basic HTML and CSS along with Adobe Dreamweaver. Although I really did enjoyed that class, it took a little more convincing for me to decide that that was what I wanted to do for my career. It wasn’t until I took another Web design class in college that I realized that was what I wanted to do.

In my time studying web development at UVU, I have learned a ton about the industry. In my major I have loved learning about designing websites and planning the user experience. Although I do enjoy designing websites, I’ve realized that I prefer to actually build them. While studying web development, I have had the opportunity to learn all kinds of languages and frameworks that I didn’t even know existed. At this point, I am very happy with my career choice as it ties in with a lot of the things that I love —exploring new technology, designing, and coding.
